Two O’Clock on a Monday

Monday 27 July 2026, around 2:00pm AEST. In offices, utes, classrooms and waiting rooms across the country, phones went off simultaneously — a siren-like tone and ten seconds of vibration, overriding silent mode and do not disturb, with a message on screen that said plainly that it was a test.

That was AusAlert, and it goes live on 1 October 2026.

It is a genuine step forward for public safety in Australia. It is also, if you run a business, an unusually well-publicised prompt to ask a question almost nobody asks until the day it matters: if something went wrong here tomorrow, could we actually tell anyone?

Not evacuate — most businesses have that written down. We mean the other half. Change what callers hear. Move the calls to somebody who is safe. Message every staff member and know who replied. Tell three hundred customers before they ring you. From a mobile phone, standing in a car park, with no access to the building and no help from a technician.

What AusAlert Actually Is

AusAlert is Australia’s new national emergency warning system, delivered by the National Emergency Management Agency. It sends urgent messages to compatible mobile phones and other mobile devices in a specified area, and it will eventually replace Emergency Alert, the SMS-based system Australia has used until now.

State and territory emergency services organisations and some Australian Government agencies can issue the alerts. Every message tells you what the emergency is, where it is happening, how serious it is, what you should do, who sent it, and where to find more information.

NEMA has also indicated that AusAlert will in future send automated voice messages to landline phones inside a targeted area — relevant for premises where a fixed line remains the main point of contact.

Cell Broadcast, and Why It Is Better

The technology change is the reason this is an upgrade rather than a rebrand.

An SMS alert system must know who to send to. It assembles a list of numbers in an area and sends individual messages over the same infrastructure carrying everybody’s ordinary texts — which, during an emergency, is exactly the infrastructure that is jammed. Messages queue. Some arrive after they were useful.

Cell broadcast transmits from the tower to every compatible device in range at once. It behaves like a radio broadcast rather than a mailing list, and that single architectural difference produces every advantage below.

Two consequences are worth pulling out. First, alerts still get through when the mobile network is congested, because they are not competing with everyone’s calls and texts. Second — and this deserves a line in your next staff security briefing — because only authorised agencies can broadcast and the system never collects your number, a criminal cannot send you a fake AusAlert. The alert on your phone is real; the text message claiming to be one and asking you to tap a link is not.

What the Test Told Us

The national test sent a single Critical Alert to every compatible device in Australia. About 94% of all mobile towers broadcast it successfully.

NEMA was upfront that inconsistent results were expected and were part of the point. Some people with older handsets or alternative operating systems such as GrapheneOS or LineageOS saw headings like “Presidential Alert” or “Extreme Threat Alert”, because those devices do not follow the Australian standard even though the message content was identical. Others received nothing at all — an unsupported or un-updated device, no signal at that moment, a tower down for maintenance, or a phone switched off or in aeroplane mode.

The one thing NEMA asks everybody to do

Keep device software current, and restart after updating. That is the main determinant of whether a phone can receive an AusAlert at all. For a business it is a five-minute addition to your device policy and your new-starter checklist — worth doing in August rather than discovering the gap during a real event in summer.

What It Will Never Do for You

AusAlert is a public warning system. It is not, and was never meant to be, a business communications tool. The distinction is easiest to see side by side.

Checking the Assumptions Underneath

Every communications plan quietly assumes you still have communications. Most disruptions take out power, internet, or both.

A Fifteen-Minute Drill

The government tested its system in front of 27 million people. Here is the small-business version, and it can be done after hours with nobody noticing.

Most businesses that run this discover the same two defects: only one person actually knows how to change the phone system, and the staff mobile list is eighteen months out of date. Both are trivial to fix once you know, and impossible to fix at 7am during a flood.

AusAlert going live on 1 October is good news, and the July test showed it working across the overwhelming majority of the network. Can scammers send fake AusAlert messages?
